Tavernier, Bertrand

   critic, cinematographer A leading motion picture director and screenwriter known for his studies of complex interpersonal relationships, Bertrand Tavernier was born in lyon and studied law before beginning a career as a film critic. He was attracted to the film industry early in his youth, attending film clubs and working in the industry's press in various capacities, especially as a publicist promoting various unknown or unappreciated directors. Even today, with his own film career well advanced, he still sought to bring to the fore overlooked writers and directors, especially American, and has edited a monumental Dictionnaire du cinéma américain (1991). His first work as a director was on a short segment of the film Les Baisers (1964), and his best works have a warm aspect, colored by a sense of seriousness, along the lines of jeanrenoir: L'Horloger de Saint-Paul (1974), which won a number of awards.
